I have had some feedback that forums are "confusing" for newies.
So I am considering using an XF Page to create a "front page."
Here I would explain what we're about, and have simple coloured boxes in a table which take you to key places, with the whole thing prettified up. Each box would explain what its contents are about.
Somerthing like this;

MY FIRST STEPS Change Avatar / Change Profile / Make hello post.
DOING POSTS Bold Italic. Links. Images. Quoting. Signature.
MY MESSAGES Write a private message/ Check my Inbox/ Alerts
ALL MEMBERS DIRECTORY Members list, Members search and what it tells you.
HOW THINGS WORK Navbar. + various Help pages listed.
OUR TWO IMPORTANT RULES

CONTENTS the full forumlist. What's New? Notifications and Alerts.

CATEGORY 2
etc
But how would I make the basic forum URL point to this page?
So when you use www.mysite.com/forums this is what you get?
Then what would I now use for the forumlist URL instead of www.mysite.com/forums ?
