I assume we won't be able to use the new xen:callback helper in the userfield output html?
If it will be possible => ignore this suggestion.
Additional to the preSave callback i would suggest to have a callback method which is called while inside the prepareUserField method if a callback method is set.
This would allow us to manipulate the value (if needed) without owerwriting the userfield model to customize the prepare method
