User upgrades addition

So our forum has been looking into ways to let people get user upgrades and noticed the only way is via User Upgrades, which require real money. However, we're looking to create a system where people earn a reward doing various things around the site (much like the trophy points do), then should be able to use this this reward to buy user upgrades.
The points could be awarded automatically, awarded by staff or a combo hereof.

We couldn't find it, but does such a resource already exist?
Or something similar to what I'm describing.
