Hi fellow Xenforo people!

Ive been watching the situation with regards to add-ons updates/availability in xf2.3, and from my perspective we are getting close to being able to update to 2.3.x

Firstly - a massive thanks to @CedricV for his guide which answers most of my questions (https://xenforo.com/community/threads/guide-upgrading-from-xenforo-2-2-to-xenforo-2-3-guide.223220/) (y)

I wondered if someone could clarify around image optimisation to webp please - is this something that happens from the current point onwards on all uploaded images? Is there any way to enable this on historical images - i.e. convert what is currently present to webp? (Just thinking to save space on what is currently there).

Also - people that have donated to the site using the inbuilt "account upgrades" functionality - Will any of these that are currently in place be lost with the upgrade to the new paypal integration?

Thanks
Paul

You're welcome Paul, glad it helps! :)

About the image optimization, this should clarify your questions:

1722497650973.webp

Your upgraded accounts will not be lost when updating to 2.3 - You can still choose to offer the PayPal legacy payment option.

wrt webp. it is completely optional. you can enable the option and new uploads would be converted to webp. you also have a command line tool and backend option to convert existing images to webp. do remember that this conversion is permanent. original images are not retained. so if image quality is not to your liking, there is no going back. so best to take complete files and database backup before running the conversion. check quality of old images and if you think they are good enough... keep it that way!

Thanks @Chromaniac (y)

If i have a complete backup is it just a case of replacing the suspect image with the original one if the quality is poor? I guess the extension also needs to be ammended upon restoration?

you would have to replace everything. files and database. attachment data is stored in database. webp conversion does more than just converting files, it also updates all references to images in database so that existing images in posts are rendered properly.

basically, take full backup of files and database. convert to webp. check everything. if you are not happy with conversion, restore full backup.

this is very important. you wouldn't be able to manually undo the changes by just uploading old files. you would need everything to be restored from before the conversion.
