Yeah, that's what I meant when I said:
...unless the forum owner runs their own server/has a lot of control over their implementation of MySQL there's no way round this.

I'd love to be able to run short queries, but I'm in the same boat as you, alas. The easiest way round it that I found was to implement a Google Site Search, which allows you to put a Google search box on your page that only searches your forum. It returns a lot of results, so isn't as "clean" as the built-in search results, but it's great for plain English searches and short queries. :)
 
I would add the Google Site Search, but I've also heard some bad things about it (that I won't share here because they're not really proven facts). I'll look into it, but I for one never use the forum search feature (on any board) and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
