XF 2.1 unfurling link image possible very poor performance for threads

I just unfurled a link from huffington post and the image that was loaded into the snippet was this

Yes it is 1910x1000 and then resized I assume by css tiny to fit put in the snippet. If you have a thread with a dozen unfurls that use an image. woah, you are suddenly loading a ton of large image files for marginal purpose. Is there a way to stop the loading of the image in unfurls? I think css hide is not enough. It will still load.
