Fixed Unable to remove from secondary user group

I have an odd one that I've been struggling with for several days.

When I attempt to remove a specific secondary group (#20) from users, save, all goes well - but the change does not seem to stick/apply/save.
It works for other secondary usergroups, just not this one. I can add this one to people, just not un check it and remove it.
In addition, it does not show an entry in the logs -> USER CHANGE LOG when this behavior is happening. (but does for other usergroup changes)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have tried disabling listeners/disabling all add-ons
I have tried disabling Cloudflare and XF Botguard
I have tried disabling cache / memcached in config.php
I tried multiple browsers and anonymous mode in browser.
I tried from mobile (android) vs PC (windows 11)
I tried running rebuild caches -> clean up permissions
I tried disabling my a/v software (on the PC, not the server)
I tried renaming usergroup 20's text/name, to something different.

XF 2.3.12
CloudLinux v8.10.0 STANDARD kvm
cpanel 136.0.32
PHP version 8.3.31
MySQL version 11.4.12 (11.4.12-MariaDB-log)
PHP memory_limit 512M
PHP post_max_size 512M
PHP upload_max_filesize 512M
PHP max_input_vars 25000
PHP max_execution_time 600
cURL version 8.21.0cURL
SSL version OpenSSL/1.1.1w
OpenSSL version OpenSSL 1.1.1w 11 Sep 2023
Cloudflare
XF Botguard which also uses memcached (enabled in config.php)
Litespeed is disabled

Note: Usergroup #20 for me is one that Siropu Ads Manager manages, to indicate when an advertiser is current with an active ad. (to put a banner on their posts, etc) It normally maintains access to this group through their add on. I've always been able to manually change this myself. I turned listeners off, so I doubt this add-on is a factor, but mentioning it just in case.

Thanks in advance!

What was the latest change done to the forum prior to this happening?

XF Bot Guard, Cloudflare, enabling the cache, and the newest Xenforo. (all around 4-6 weeks ago) I don't know how long the issue has existed.

I'm hoping it isnt some kind of database corruption.

If any third party / custom add on was causing this, the issue would have been solved when you disabled all add ons. The same goes for the other changes that you listed.

Can you try something, to remove that secondary group from an user directly from the database? You can do that by running this query, but first make a backup of the xf_user table.

Any time I try to reply to your thread with a sql query that I prepared to troubleshoot this I get this error:

Oops! We ran into some problems. Please try again later. More error details may be in the browser console.

Well I didnt find a fix or cause for the issue of not being able to unselect a particular usergroup from member records, but did have success by completely deleting that usergroup and creating a replacement. The new one works as intended. I wish I knew why that was happening, though, and fear some kind of database corruption.

Thanks to Andy B for assisting

I've noticed the same issue today myself, and not sure how long this has existed. I can't add or remove a secondary user group from anyone, including myself.

XF 2.3.12

Examples - I have a user group titled "Supporting Members". I can add a user to this manually and remove a user from this manually, but I cannot remove myself from this group (I am the admin). I have another user group that grants access to a single specific forum, I can't remove the same user in the previous example from this group.

Use the batch updater to match with yourself for now to remove it.

I believe this started happening with XF 2.3.11 or XF 2.3.12.

I put a trouble ticket in yesterday, and Paul confirmed that they are aware and working on it.

I also cant downgrade a membership upgrade, which is probably related.

I assume he changed this thread to CONFIRMED today.

No, Cloud customers are currently on 2.3.11 plus the security fixes from 2.3.12 and 2.3.13.

2.3.14 for Cloud will include some of the fixes from 2.3.13 including this and a bunch of new fixes and changes.
