Top Poster in last X hours?

I'm not looking for a modification...I'm trying to write one.
To do this I need to "understand" how this works...okay.....
Right, how best to phrase this question? Hmm....

The $activeUsers string shows the top posters right?
How would I detect $activeUsers in last X hours?
Basically like top poster in last X hours.
Not top overall poster, get what I mean?

Im in need of a Top poster plugin like Of the week - Of the month etc. that would be awesome and much needed!

And wish post ratings would get a widget going too :/

Just think on your top todays/week/month posters. If you looked at showcase and seen how they used a tabbed block I think this would be perfect for what you are wanting layout wise.

You have the title "Top Posters" and then the tabs titled "Day" "Week" "Month" where you can switch to each area without leaving the page.

I'm not sure i understand how to use this.
I want a kind of cron type thing that runs, hourly, and finds the top poster of that last hour (not overall).
Then, I want it to display that users ad (which will be a custom field allowing them to input their image URL).
