XF 2.2 too many usergroups?

Our site makes heavy use of user groups and usergroup promotions to handle both member recognition and feature management.

We are deploying a new addon to handle commercial sales in a forum setting are thinking about using usergroups to recognize the sellers and the buyers in this activity. For the buyers, the point would be to ensure they have read the rules of the forum and for the sellers to ensure they have agreed to the commercial terms of the sales they might make.

We have 90 current usergroups. Is there a reason to avoid adding usergroups. The classes of recognition usergroups each has a distinctive first letter to make it easier to view the list, so it does not seem to be a really big job to me to use them. But since one of the site management group said there might be a performance problem , I thought I would ask here.

Here is a screen shot of our stats. The forum was started in 2002. We do not automatically remove registrations. The NAWCC is an educational not for profit.
Everyone belongs to the Registered User group unless they have been banned by some action. Of the Registered Users, everyone is either a Member or Friend. Members have paid their annual dues. Friends have not paid dues. Some Friends are lapsed Members.
The other screen shot is my post tag. It is more elaborate than most but shows the handling and use of recognition type user groups.

It's significantly more than most sites but the only real impact will be when upgrading, installing or uninstall add-ons, adding or removing nodes, which is when the permission combinations are rebuilt.

That may take a bit longer than usual.

Other than that, you shouldn't have any issues for normal use.

This is really something only you can answer. If there is a valid reason for all the usergroups and you find it useful then why not? I doubt it will hit the performance. I would just find that unmanageable though and too complex re: permissions, styling or whatever. Im just couldn't do it!

Since dues paying membership is a major part of the organizations business plan, the banners are a way to generate income. For me, the labor of maintaining it, is worth the effort. Others in the organization favor requiring membership to view content which I am opposed to.

Do all usergroups add additional permissions or some just for the banners? If the latter, wouldnt badges via the badges addon be a better way to handle it?

I have 66 usergroups presently. 13m posts. Zero issues.

My 20-year usergroup has 2600+ members (must log on to receive the group upgrade).. 88 members in the 10,000+ post group, 3 members in the 30,000+ post group.

I wouldn't sweat it.

Mine is similar. No issues.
