I've had several users over the years report problems during the registration process because they couldn't find an acceptable username "long enough" to meet the naming requirements. Every time, we've discovered they were mis-understanding the error message, assuming the maximum username length warning was actually a minimum username length warning.

I always thought that was really weird until just now, when I actually saw the maximum username length warning message:

"Please enter a name that is at most X characters long."

I'm a native English speaker, and I had to stop and parse that for a second. For non-English speakers, I imagine this could be pretty confusing. I would suggest something else, like:
  • "Please enter a name with less than X characters."
  • "Your name cannot be more than X characters long."
  • "The maximum length for a username is X characters."
