The avatar box beside my posts is stretched long

I don't know why there's all that green areas under the avatar.
Maybe I set something somewhere else that governs that margin. Can't think of anything though.

OK the user title area height can be controlled from Style Properties/Message Layout/User Text Block

The green area is now neat and shallow.
BUT
the text for the user title still locates further down so it's now muddled up with the "member from" text on the white part.

You have a 230px margin-left on the message block user name which is causing a few problems.
