ThemeHouse updated [TH] Spotify with a new update entry:

Version 1.0.1 released

  • XenForo 2.1 support
  • Add option to disable playback button on member view and tooltips
  • Option to show playback details (currently just song and album) on member view and tooltips
  • Member privacy option so users can choose who can see their playback information
  • Added "now playing" widget
Bugs Fixed:
  • Fixed "Listening to Spotify" button styling on UI.X

Do you have a screenshot of the new "now playing" widget?

Yep, I can add a screenshot to the resource page soon. There are two widgets (both look nearly identical). One shows 5 (configurable) songs currently being played by members, and the others show the top 5 (also configurable) most played songs among users.

Any plans to make the widget entries clickable to display a similar "Spotify playback" overlay?

It would also be a nice touch if you could list the member(s) listening to each track that is now playing, as well as a separate log of the most popular tracks to see which members listened to them and when.

Not a bad idea as I'll add this too our issue tracker as a feature suggestion ;)

Is it possible to make the songs highlighted in the Now playing/Most played widgets into clickable links that open the now playing overlay you're using elsewhere?

And/or can you add attribution to the widget so we can see who's playing the song?

I've gone ahead and created an issue on these questions that you are asking. They have been added as an enhancement ;) You are welcome to add more to that issue if you'd like as well.

Feature request:

Make it possible to insert a spotify playlist url in ACP and let the playlist play site-wide (like an online-radio). Default muted.

Place a "news ticker" like bar (spotify web player) under the sticky navigation bar and/or in main page below the website title. Probably move the widget around to forum_list maybe?

Example:

193891

Or like this:

193892

I have a music themed website, and it would be great if I could stream music from a playlist on my board for visitors.

I made a wordpress website for a musician friend years ago and he wanted the ability for visitors to play and listen to his tracks while browsing.

Reminds me of that, ended up adding SCM music player to the bottom, it would continue playing smoothly and uninterrupted even with each new page load.

193897

I know a lot of people hate any kind of music on websites, but with the kind of music it was, it was really soothing to listen to it while browsing his site. I can imagine it could be kind of neat to have the option of some kind of modern live streaming communal version of that for an online community.

I agree, I hate it too. That is why I said

Default muted.

People hate the sudden voices/sounds which can be triggered by a visit to a website. That is why such thing must be in a muted state by default.
BUT having a "radio station" a.k.a. a spotify playlist (or youtube) could be great for some communities.

You could make stuff like "Pop monday", "Rock Tuesday" and so on and play 24 hours a day specific genres. And bored people could listen to the radio with 1 click. People love to discover new stuff, new music. So there is a potential, which is why I ask for a feature to implement that. On the other hand my expectations are low because the ThemeHouse guys give rarely attention to their addons, but it is worth a try.

Btw. maybe we can integrate spotify into a html XF widget? I didn't think about that.

Assuming something like that is even possible with Spotify it would stop playing when you change pages since Xenforo isn’t a single page app

Even if for example a widget is configured to be displayed on all pages, from forum_list to thread_list etc.?

Alternative approach: once the user kicks it off on the webpage wouldn't the desktop client take over the stream playback? From then on you just have to poll the API to show the user what they're currently playing in the widget, like you do for the current overlay.

or something.

Or maybe just run it on the main forum page. So people will get used to know that the player only works there and will let that tab/page open if they want to listen to it?

It doesn't need to work flawlessly across all pages without a break or something. A simple "radio station" which works on a single page is good enough for the start, for example the forum_list.

@thumped we shouldn't forget smartphone users btw who are 50% of the visitors at least.

well it doesn't have to be 100% effective on all browsers/devices - i mean i just checked and the same principle sort of applies on iOS spotify at least, although clicking a playlist does bring the user out of the browser and in to the spotify app, and you need to manually press play like some kind of caveman, and then you have the problem that they won't necessarily go back to the browser tab they were just in.

or you could just make it work like I suggested on desktop only, and do something else on mobile. or something.
