XF 2.1 Test user permissions

in 1.5 it was easy to find but on 2.X I cannot find where to chech a users permissions, to basically see what they see from their view. I am sure it is simple but I must be missing something

It is no longer there.

What you have is Analyse permissions in Admin Control Panel > Groups and Permissions

You put in the users's name and you see all the permissions from their different groups and how they add up to a final either yes or no and this which shows you what may be wrong, but not what they actually see.

There are addons that do that such as login as user:

I thought the same, but in the end, Analyse Permissions is better, because you get to find out what the permission issue. Honestly, it's worth trying. It extends to nodes, so you can tell whether or not they can see or post in a cerian node - and you get to see why.
