I have been looking for something like this for a long while but never came across during my days with vBulletin.

If there can be some sort of community moderation, wherein if there is a spam post and reasonable amount of users (say 10) "report" the post then that post should become invisible until a moderator can take a look at it and either approve it or keep it as invisible.

If this has been suggested already, or if this feature already exists, please ignore this.

Oh and just to add, I did see the video by Kier/Floris about the "report" button and how a moderator can see reported posts etc. But this is different in the sense that it is actually being moderated by the community until a moderator gets a chance to look at it.

Great idea, sort of like the members throw a post into pre-moderation.

For forums without moderators online 24/7 I suggest pre-moderation for all new member posts until they are moved into a super user group, that way no porn or Viagra spam is ever seen by the public.

I have something similar, only certain people can give infractions.
If they give a spam infraction the person is automatically banned until I can clean up the posts.

But yes, self policing per a trusted usergroup sounds like a good idea.

It does not really have to be a specific usergroup, although this has the possibility of being misused by people creating multiple IDs to report good posts.

Do you already have this for vBulletin. If yes, is it a custom mod for your website or is it publicly available?

It's built into v3.
User Infraction Manager and Automatic Ban.
It's so mods can ban a spammer right away without me giving them any additional permissions.

Aah the infractions. That's again moderator driven rather than community driven. The community moderation comes into picture most probably because not many forums can have moderators online 24/7. And before a moderator can delete/infract the post/user the damage is already done.

One more additional advantage of the community moderation is that, if in a day there are say 50 reported posts, out of which 45 have 1 report whereas the other 5 have 4-5 reports, then it gives a sense of priority for the moderator looking at these 50 reported posts. The moderator would first look at the 5 posts with higher reports and then move on the other 45 reported posts

Ive tried in vain to do something like this for years with my forum, but none of the ways ive tried seemed to work. It may be possible with XenForos permission system, it wasnt with vB's though.

What i want is the ability to give a usergroup for my senior/trusted members the ability to soft delete questionable posts from members in usergroups lower in the hierarchy.
That takes care of spam and other issues that have to do with new people posting nonsense.
And those viewed to be abusing the system get dropped out of the trusted usergroup and into regular users.

Actually, I am using something like this for VB. I have the "helpful answers" mod installed using reputation. If a new user makes some kind of obscene post users can give it a thumbs down. I have the board set so that if a user is below a certain reputation level they can't post. It also will hide posts that get a certain amount of negative ratings. Essentially allows the community to be moderation :)

A lot of thought should be spent in this. It *could* be abused very easially.

Yes that is true, it could be abused easily. However, depending on the community, it can be easily made sure so that users will not be able to abuse it. One of the easiest ways this can be abused is when users create multiple usernames and send multiple reports on posts/users that they personally do not like. If multiple regs can be stopped by implementing email verfication, single reg from a single IP etc .. then the system will not be abused.

This sounds like it could be an interesting mod. Although there is the chance of abusing it, I think something like this that is set up like Craigslist has with the Reported Post, Spam Post links would work. Although you do hear about a very little abuse from Craigslist users, it's a self sub-staining system that the community keeps 'in line...'

One way to keep the abuse down in a system like this is to have a log of anyone that has 'reported content'. This way if you see pattern of User A ALWAYS reporting user B's posts/topics then you should be able to remove User A's ability to report any post/topics.

If this type of feature is put in place, don't remove the button to report a post from User A, just remove the results of them pressing the button. If you remove the button, they will know they have been removed from the 'community reporting' and might open another account to get around it.

Excellent .. especially the part of letting the abusive user report but not show his results .. killer idea :D

I beg to differ. On a community I'm a member of there are a lot of real-life friends registered. And even without that, when people have been on a forum for some time you gain new friends. It's quite easy to get together a group and "bring down" a member, reporting all of there posts 1 time per member. If that group is just 10 members, all of that victim's posts will get unapproved.

Yes I agree with your comment. However it would still be a very good feature. There are many other features that could be equally misused, but are still part of the forum.

A simple example is registration. A member can create many number of emails and register from different IPs (which is not at all difficult if you have a dynamic IP). No matter what you do, it's highly impossible to stop such people, unless you have paid registrations.

I feel that there are always cases of misuse, in any feature, but this will be one of the best additions if you have a large community and only a few trusted moderators (who cannot obviously be online 24/7)

You are of course correct. However, your case of registration misuse is kinda flawed but I certainly get the point and you are correct - a lot of features can get misused. But allowing the community to basically soft-delete posts(it would have that effect for the users) based on how many members click the report button is just wrong in my eyes and I would never have any use of this as it currently has been described.

I understand if certain communities would benefit from this but perhaps it's better suited as a modification. If it gets implemented into the core I really would like it to be an option to turn it off.

It's only going to be a temporary soft delete, until a moderator gets a chance to look at it. If the report seems to be falsely made, the moderator will always have the chance to delete the reports and the post will go back up again :)

On the Warrior Forum, with vB they have a system that automatically puts posts into the mod que whenever they get X number of reports.

Is this mod available publicly or for a price or is it a custom mod made exclusively for that forum?

I'm assuming its a privately made modification. I've never seen it public anywhere

Perhaps something like at some of those fml websites would work if you could get users to use it. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, some of them have a system in place where users can choose to help approve or reject new posts. Basically, the user goes to a page that displays a random post pending approval, and the user can then decide whether it should be approved or rejected. I'm guessing that there is some threshold of approval or rejection votes that must be met before it gets removed from the moderation queue.

I personally hate putting posts in moderation queue as soon as they are posted, because many times it just confuses the users and they tend to double post.
