I had that issue before too. It's mostly because of the stressors of a political forum. People get burned out fast.I actually want to switch our forum to almost no moderation. Almost like what Sociallu Uncensored has going. Although we've had our fair share of lessons as well.

We had one admin flip out and leave after being confronted for moderating like Hitler. Seriously...she was way out of control. She spazzed out, took a few of the top posters, and deleted herself and every thread/post she ever made off the board before we even knew what happened. Then she tried to ruin our reputation. Luckily none of it worked and her IP is now banned.

We also have a moderator who is out of control and we're trying to figure out how to deal with that one civilly.

We had a problem once where an admin deleted a bunch of forums, before leaving

We didn't notice for days afterwards, by which time I thought it was too late to restore from a backup, but then I figured out how to import from a backup, but only importing missing entries.

Worked like a charm.

I take database backups every 3 hours and full site backups once a day, all are sent to an offsite FTP server.

I've actually just been through the moderator permissions on my forum after reading this thread. I've removed their ability to hard delete anything, and they only have the ability to soft delete threads / posts now. They can still edit posts, but we have the User Essentials mod installed, and reason for edit is a requirement for all members, so we have an audit trail showing posts have been edited.

I've also reviewed the other administrators I have since we were on phpBB3. No one except myself can access to ACP, because it's locked down to my static IP address for home / work. So, I've proposed to them that I'm going to shove them back into the Moderator group, given they have no actual access to the ACP, but have permissions to hard delete due to myself having them in the Admin group. Will see how that goes down with them.

We had a mutiny once.

When our site was hacked into (I was on vacation) the the person posted as me trolling everyone include the staff, then pretended to be someone else claiming to be the new owner, then the hacker came back as "me" claiming that the site was hacked and that there was no new owner; but continued to pretend to be "me" and proceeded to troll people even more (including the staff). This person finally after p*ssing everyone off announced the site was closed and told everyone to go join his site.

By the time I came back and opened the site, people didn't know what to think or make of it. The person had done a fine job of discrediting me and with all that back and forth, the staff and much of the community thought I was trying to play everyone as the fool. The end result was my staff joined his staff and started to PM people (spam) his link.

They got many others to join in that mutiny, before I turned off the PM System and prevent anyone from posting the link or e-mail addresses.

Yikes Adam, that's..disturbing.
It was well thought out in my option, which is what sucked. :(

No one ever wants to have their site hacked into, but if you find yourself the victim of such; pray and hope all they do is deface your page, delete stuff, and maybe spam like most people do when they go hacking things.

Because if you suffer as I did... Not only will you have been hacked into, but your community will seriously have doubts about who you are. As in my case, people ended up believing that the hacker was really me trolling... ie... They (many) believed there was no hacker and it was me being stupid.

That seriously sucks Adam. I've never even heard of such a thing like that before! It's unthinkable :-/

It was a mind f*ck to say the least.

It kind of makes you wish that the little a**holes of the world were really stupid people and didn't know what they were doing, but sadly I find the a**holes of the world are actually really smart and know exactly how to f*ck people over.

"jay" has so many things in common with "david" from that site that it is sickening. Both of them owe their "success" (can we call it that? ) to the false propaganda they both pass around.

But yes, that is where our traffic was directed to (jay's site). Ironically the guy owned a copy of IPB for about 10 years and only found "success" after our hack.

On our site the only rules are thus
  • No illegal content
  • No spam. Posting of e-mail addresses or attempting to overcome our spam filters will also be viewed as spam.
  • No hard-core pornography, outside Adult Table or Social Groups
Everything thing else is allowed. We're uncensored and so there are really no rules. Staff technically has little, if ever, anything to do. They're free to be themselves as they were before they were staff. No behavior change required.

http://www.rpdom.com/pages/rules/

Those are the only real written rules we have, everything else is common sense and on how we decide to do things as an administration.

In fact those rules were created just because of one member because he kept pushing the limits for a year and it was the first person we ever have banned.
