SMTP Server Causing Lag in Notification Emails

We are on an Ubuntu server running virtualmin/webmin, using Postfix to send emails. During times of heavy use, we get up to a 30 mins delay in our email notifications. Can anyone suggest anything to help? Our hosts has been of no help.
