Fixed Slow loading of smilies & emojis menu - needs to be faster

Thank you for sorting this, it is much better now (y)
Yeah, it is better now. But I find this solution even better:
View attachment Smileys-Bar-Demo.mp4

  • Recently used and default smileys loads faster than the text editor does.
  • The popup no longer obstructs the view.
  • Handling custom categories in cellphone is much better.
:) 👌

Don't know if I should post on this thread or since it is already declared closed I should reopen a new one.

Thing is the smileys are driving my users mad, it's taking over 7 seconds to load the smileys at first click on a laptop on LAN, an absurd.

Can't identify when exactly in time this started to happen, but it was recently, perhaps with the new version update (v2.1.10 Patch 2).

The damn thing takes 7+ seconds on every page we load, it never gets cached in the browser, it's unbearable.

Can someone from dev team please take a look into this?

Nothing changed in 2.1.10 Patch 2 that would trigger this.

There have been no other reports of this since being fixed so in the first instance I'd post a new thread in the Troubleshooting forum to see if others have an experience consistent with your own.

It's worth also checking on other XF forums (such as this one) to see if it is a reproducible issue or whether it just affects your own forum.

Please also provide browser/OS versions when you post the new thread

Ok, this is fairly silly. We've tracked this down to some super weird behaviour in Android.

I think I explained before, but we obviously do not attempt to load every single emoji image from EmojiOne when the emoji menu is loaded. Instead, we render this:
HTML:
<span class="smilie smilie--emoji smilie--lazyLoad" data-alt="🙂" title="Slightly smiling face" data-src="path/to/emojione/image.png" data-shortname="">🙂</span>
This is just some basic HTML with the native emoji character in place (i.e. the emoji is the standard device emoji, rather than a web-hosted image).

After the emoji menu loads, once these spans are visible in the viewport (so only about 30-40 at a time) we convert them to an image, pointing to EmojiOne.

If we remove that lazy loading stuff, and just load the spans with no additional magic, Android still takes a huge amount of time to load the menu.

For some reason, on Android, there is some major overhead in displaying their native emoji images 🙂.

If we change the HTML to this (which we have done):
HTML:
<span class="smilie smilie--emoji smilie--lazyLoad" title="Slightly smiling face" data-src="path/to/emojione/image.png" data-shortname=""></span>
Then the emoji menu loads much quicker.

If you want to give it a try here, those changes have been rolled out and you should see an improvement.
Does this work for 2.3.13 as well? "Joy Pixels - Serve from preferred CDN". Before the update, with version 2.2, I never had issues like this.

There were no changes in 2.3.13 or really at all during any 2.3.x versions. The change you're asking whether works was included over 6 years ago and likely hasn't changed since so is already included in 2.3.13.

Probably best not to answer here. This is a closed bug report.

If you're encountering a specific issue, open a new bug report and provide details of exactly what you're seeing vs. what you're expecting so we can look at it with fresh eyes.
