Should XenForo use AVIF images down the road?

actually never heard of it.
I don't like webp as png is small enough and editing / producing png is easy. I just switched to png from jpg a year ago as jpg seems to be fading away. Although icloud loves .jpg

EDIT.
It's an animated .gif replacement ?
Animated gifs are quite bloated.

AVIF is an image file format based on a video codec.
AVIF is a video file format ?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern, open-source, and royalty-free image format based on the AV1 video codec. Designed for the web, it offers superior compression efficiency compared to JPEG and WebP, resulting in significantly smaller file sizes without sacrificing image quality, supporting transparency, and HDR.

Key Characteristics of AVIF:
  • Superior Compression: AVIF files are often 30–50% smaller than JPEGs at similar quality levels, improving page loading speeds and reducing bandwidth usage.
  • High Quality & Features:Supports high dynamic range (HDR), wide color gamut, lossy and lossless compression, and alpha channel (transparency)
    .
    • Industry Backing: Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, with backing from Google, Netflix, Amazon, and Apple.
    • Browser Support: Supported by most modern browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera.
    • Use Cases: Highly recommended for web development to enhance SEO and user experience through faster loading, especially for heavy image-based sites.

While encoding (creating) AVIF images can be slower than other formats, its advantages in performance make it a leading choice for the future of web imagery.

With a bit of luck JpegXL will be supported by all major browsers in the future - this might be a even better option than AVIF.

yeah jxl eventually. i think the top three browsers essentially support it directly or through flags already. avif is a good option pretty much immediately. webp implementation came too late and the format is just not good enough compared to newer options. avif is supported in all browsers for a while now and should be a good option as an alternative to webp for folks who think their community can use it right away.
