XF 1.5 Separate permissions for guests and unconfirmed?

I'm currently trying to set up a node which can be viewed by unconfirmed (registered) users, but not by guests. Giving view permission to the "Unregistered / Unconfirmed" group shows it to both groups.

Various other forum settings allow you to condition directly on the user state, but I can't find any such option for node permissions. I've tried using a user group promotion to apply a new "registered but unconfirmed" group to unconfirmed users, but even though these users do get assigned that group they can't see the node.

Is there a way to do this?

Not without code edits and/or add-ons, Unconfirmed users are given the hardcoded "Unregistered" group.

What I do is create notices which explicitly target the unconfirmed state, and see if people can demonstrated the capacity to read.
