You cannot remove a route, but you can rename it. The URL without an ID is configured per forum.

Not sure how vBulletin does it (never ran it).

Here is where you can put the URL in the ACP -> Applications for the nodes

When you do that, this is what the address bar looks like when you go to the Site Announcements

And when you go into an actual topic topic itself

And without the URL enabled this is what the Site Announcements node looks like

Note, I have friendly URL's enabled.

Far as I know you won't be able to do that as you have to have a route defined (normally forum). My sites are installed in the root so that is why it is domain.com/forum/. I could rename /forum with a route, but it will still have to be something static. To get the name-thread may take an add-on (@Jeremy or @Jake Bunce) could probably better tell you.
Also, I think when you enter the thread it will still show the ID and not the thread name (again may require an add-on or possibly template changes).

You will need an add-on to accomplish that, it's not possible with the default software.

I am trying to do this as well to match more closely a forum that I am porting over from VB3.7. Is there an add-on available to help with this?

    No, not currently.
