So TikTok is going bye bye in the US.

My thoughts are mixed on this.

On one hand I’m glad this gross, low IQ, monumentally depraved, trashy, society killing, disgusting, immoral, ridiculous, depraved, degenerate, useless, moron making, dumpster fire of a social website is being shut down in the U. S.

But on the other hand, is it really because of the Chinese or our own government’s overreach? 🤷‍♀️

I’m conflicted. But I’m not sad that useless “influencers” are going loose their 10k/month grift. Get a real job!

Building any audience/community on 3rd party cloud-hosted platform is always a risk. i.e. Facebook groups, Youtube etc. Anyone remember Google+ Circle/Groups heh

Don't use Tiktok myself seems like a time-waster. But I am sure if Tiktok is banned, another social media time waster will eventually take it's place :)

All the folks I know on TikTok are flooding to RedNote. Which is essentially Chinese TikTok rather than Americanised Chinese TikTok. Which rather defeats the point of the ban entirely by accident. (Because none of the folks I know are doing it out of any concerted political point, it’s just “I want my dopamine stream kthx”)

Unless the algorithm is similar to Douyin, where creators who support spreading informative and educational material, like how to garden; build things; do arts and crafts; etc., are propped up over those who are twerking with their OF names.

It kinda doesn’t matter what the algorithm is - the key irony is that the US banned TikTok because “all our secrets getting into Chinese hands” and people just go over to the one actually based in China and hand over their “secrets” anyway.

It will have farther reaches than just TikTok, and Biden signed it into law.

Quick summary:
Under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), applications controlled by entities from designated foreign adversaries are subject to strict regulations in the United States. Specifically, PAFACA prohibits the distribution, maintenance, or updating of such "foreign adversary controlled applications" by web hosting services and app stores within the U.S., unless the application's owners execute a "qualified divestiture" within 270 days of its designation.

Designation Criteria for Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications

For an application to be classified as a foreign adversary controlled application under PAFACA, it must meet the following criteria:

  1. Application Type and User Base:
The application must be a website, desktop application, mobile application, or augmented/immersive technology platform that allows registered users to generate, share, and view content, and have at least 1 million monthly active users.
  2. Ownership and Control:
The application must be operated by individuals or entities domiciled in, headquartered in, maintaining a principal place of business in, or organized under the laws of a country designated as a U.S. foreign adversary under Section 4872(d)(2) of Title 10 of the United States Code. These foreign adversaries currently include:
    • China (including Hong Kong and Macau)
    • Russia
    • Iran
    • North Korea
    • Cuba
    • Venezuela (under the Maduro regime)
Alternatively, the application can be designated if at least 20% of its ownership stake is held by such persons.
  3. National Security Threat:
The application must be determined by the President to present a significant national security threat.

Implications for Ownership

If an Chinese entity owns a social media platform that meets these criteria, it would be required to divest its ownership to ensure the application is no longer under the control of a foreign adversary. Failure to comply within the specified timeframe would result in the application being effectively banned in the U.S., as web hosting services and app stores would be prohibited from supporting it.

While an Iranian entity could theoretically own a social media platform in the U.S., maintaining such ownership would necessitate compliance with PAFACA's divestiture requirements to avoid operational restrictions within the country.

Short summary of the law:
This bill makes it unlawful for a data broker to sell, license, rent, trade, transfer, release, disclose, or otherwise make available specified personally identifiable sensitive data of individuals who reside in the United States to North Korea, China, Russia, or Iran or an entity controlled by such a country (e.g., headquartered in or owned by a person in the country).

So you can kiss RedNote goodbye soon too, if that is the case and it's Chinese-owned.

Except that’s not what’s happening. The ban tackles TikTok US giving data to TikTok CN (for the want of better shorthand), but not if people just go and give it to TikTok CN directly. Or in this case RedNote - there’s no data broker between the individual and the company in that case.

Didnt the US lawmakers question the tiktok Ceo whether the app accessed WIFI...how do these guys get elected to run your country?

Gotta love having america around to provide laughs for the rest of the world. Freeedooommm

TikTok was just a medium for human behavior. All that will happen is all these things you dislike will be moved onto another platform. People used MySpace, then they used Facebook, then they used Vine, then they used TikTok. Now something new will take its place. Nothing will change. People have been trash, killing others, disgusting, immoral, and ridiculous since the beginning of time. Don't expect anything new.

Any job that brings in income is "real." I wonder if your opinion would change if you were the one making the money.

And again, "influencers" are not unique to TikTok. It's just a new word for an old standard, and there will still be "social media influencers" on other platforms. I think you are overestimating TikTok's influence on the world. It did not define or change society, it just reflected it.

People, in general, are very short term thinking and tend to vote based on emotion. They look at things like gas prices and think "they are too expensive, I should vote for someone else to make them lower." Then the gas prices don't get any cheaper, come next election cycle they think "they are still too expensive, I should vote for someone else to make them lower."

People don't vote based on long-term thinking or strategies. They look at the two old, out of touch people we get stuck with every four years, and pick the one that has either the (D) or (R) after their name. Then when nothing changes, instead of questioning why nothing seems to change, they just do the same thing again. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. All the news is controlled by powerful corporations that want the masses fighting each other instead of looking up and realizing the corporations are the real problem. I'm supposed to hate someone with a (R) after their name, but not the wealthy CEO that lays off thousands so their stock options can go up a quarter of a point.

You can laugh (you should), but don't think that's limited to just the United States. People are people and this is how most elections play out. (At least the ones where voting actually occurs and the results aren't just rigged entirely).

TT is officially closed in US. Good for society, children, and raises our collective IQ a bit IMHO.

But very odd and concerning that Congress did this and I’m not sure their reason was true. I mean US congress isn’t exactly filled with outstanding citizens so God only knows the truth.

I suspect Trump will bring it back somehow. 🤷‍♀️

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. Anyone in America who wants to use TikTok can still get to it via VPN. TikTok didn't invent human behavior, it just reflects it. You can see the same garbage on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. If you want to actually raise collective IQ, you have to completely change how people interact with one another and the world. It's not like people suddenly changed drastically when they moved from MySpace to Facebook.
I suspect Trump will bring it back somehow.
Well given that SCOTUS declined to hear the case, there's not a whole lot he can do about it. ByteDance could have just set up a US middleman similar to how every car company has an American branch, but they chose not to. And thus they were not allowed to operate in America because they did not do what was asked of them. The actual content was not the issue.
