XF 1.4 Security patches on an inactive license

So my license expired and I got the 1.4.7 version. I've seen several patch fixes have been added like this one https://xenforo.com/community/threads/xenforo-1-4-12-released-security-fix.109641/

Can users without an active license patch these security holes without an active license? Should I use method2 and download the zip file and apply it over my current files?

If you are able do download the patch you can patch it.
Simple as that.

Yes I can download the Method2 attached zip patch as I am a customer (not having the license active though).

Also where I can check if the extracted zip patch was successfully applied?

Just check the date of the file, before and after overwriting the file.

It's fine then, however inside the admincp when doing the file health check it lists those files as not having the default content. I suppose this shouldn't be a problem, right? As it shows the files got updated.

That's right. If you can't upgrade to the latest version and use the patch instead, it will show as having unexpected contents since it expects the default content for the version you're running.
