XF 1.4 Searching for short words

I have enhanced search, but am trying to do without it as elastic search is causing problems for my host.

Is there a way to get searches for 3 letter words? (apart from the asterisk workaround)

Not without Enhanced Search, it's a limitation of MySQL. See points 13 and 14 of the FAQ.
