MG 1.1 Safari issue?

I have a few users with Safari 9.0.2 who are reporting the following:
They get the popup window to upload their file. They are able to choose a file, but then it immediately disappears and returns to "no file selected."

Any thoughts on what could be causing this or a possible workaround besides an alternate browser?

I have just tested this myself in Safari and it works fine for me.

Do the same files upload ok in another browser? It's an odd behaviour so I'm not totally sure what would be causing it.

The users were able to upload in a different browser. Additional info seems to be that there is a lengthy lag in Safari before the file is actually attached. Odd behavior for sure, but I'm fine with the workaround of an alternate browser.

I noted that the behaviour you specifically mention suggests that Safari doesn't have Flash player enabled. If Flash player is enabled in the browser (and the Flash uploader is enabled in the user's preferences) then the performance is likely to be improved.
