replied to threads are not getting set to "watched"

when people reply to my threads(the administrator) I do not get an email even though that is set in my preferences. I also check to see if the threads are watched and they did not get automatically set to watched like set in preferences. Any thoughts?

That user preference is an "opt-in" action at the time of posting. It is not retroactive to threads that were posted before the preference was enabled. That may explain your problem in which case you need to manually watch those older threads.
