The solution is this add-on that most people are now using. Same issue was happening for me. I bought it and installed and I've had only 5 bots or less sign up in an entire 6 months. I was getting hammered daily. But this add-on really does work. Good luck.

Use xF's core registration anti-spam functionality ( /admin.php?options/groups/usersAndRegistration/ ), and/or install an anti-spam add-on.
