I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed at length. I've always found the DM interface to quite lacking. Mostly in that it is missing some key features that we are all accustomed to in messaging systems. Primarily these include
Inbox
Sent
Trash
Drafts
While most of this functionality is covered by different means in the XF schema... one key missing feature is a Trash or Recycle bin. Somewhere to (at least temporarily) act as a repository for person, Direct Messages to be recovered if deleted. As it is, once a message is deleted, it is instantly deleted permanently... there's zero room for error and no going back.
I think something like this would be very useful.
