Recover dropped Hard Drive Data?

I don't recommend SSDs as once your drive dies, all your data goes with it.
Great point. But other things could happen too, such as someone stealing the laptop, and it would also gone....

(at least that is how I am viewing my own situation/backup plan)

Each to their own... I would never go back though. Notebooks run so much better with them, and bumping them doesn't affect the HDD... so it doesn't matter if they're accidentally dropped. I figure that is what backup drives are for... but each to their own. No right solution in the world of HDD's I guess. Price, choice, etc.

There is a local specialised company near where I live that has a very good success rate of recovering data in such sitations = costs $600 for a hard drive. Unless you live in Perth this probably wn;t help you - but it at least gives you a figure as to a possible cost.

I have seen this argument before and I always thought it was very strange. It's like people are specifically planning on not having a backup and being forced to go through data recovery procedures.

Or maybe this is concern over write/erase lifespan of the drive? To be honest that really isn't a concern because the calculated lifespans are still well beyond the use-life of the drive. See this article regarding the Intel SSDs:

http://techreport.com/articles.x/15433

The 80GB Intel drive will last for 90 years at 20GB of write/erase per day according to their formula.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions.

I'm a non-technical savy person. I'll be sending it to a data recover center to see if I can get my family photos off the drive...

I just hope it's not too much and more importantly the data is still accessible.

If anyone has any suggestions in affordable data recover centers I am all ears.

I would start calling the local PC repair service shops (assuming you have those). I believe it was above $500 when I asked about it, but that was a long time ago.
