XF 1.4 Ranking images

could someone please explain me how the raking images works?
In particular, need I to install some add-on for using it?

There is no concept of "rank images" in XenForo. There is user banners (a la "Staff Member") that can be used in conjunction with User Promotions and new user groups. CSS can be used to change this into image based ranks.

Other than that, an add-on is required.

Can you tell me how to add for example the image you have in your avatar "Staff Member" ?

Staff Member is built in and should show for anyone marked as staff. Anything else needs to be added through the edit user group page (banners).

Ah right, I saw it.
But probably if I want to change that one, I need a theme or an add-on, am I right?

Change the staff member one? Its a phrase for the text, other than that you'll need custom CSS. The easiest selector is .userBanner.bannerStaff.
