MG 2.1 Random Media Widget problems

We're trying to load the default "XFMG: Media slider" to showcase a single image. I know it's a slider but... we want one to show at a time randomly.

Setting:

Number of media items to 1
and
Maximum Slides to 1

The page will oftentimes not load the entire widget at all. Are there any special circumstances for the widget to show up with this setup?

It works fine for me in my testing.

The only little edge case I can think of is that amongst the media items it is trying to pick random items from, sometimes it is selecting items which are not visible to the logged in user, and in that case it cannot display the slider.

This would work better if it was picking from a public category or categories only with the "Display from personal albums" option checked off.
