XF 1.1 Question on reducing number of people allowed in a converation.

Currently I have it bumped up to 50 at the request of a member but it turned out to be a bit of a nightmare.

I am going to reduce this to 5 or less but I want to know what happens to the conversations with all of those people in it and does it possible cause any other troubles.

It's not retroactive. It's only checked when creating a conversation or inviting people to it.

Unfortunately there are no tools for pruning or closing Private Conversations.

You'll need to remove them via a database query.
