It's possible for unregistered users to create posts (this will often be done with using a CAPTHCA), but it's not possible from unregistered users to comment on someone's profile
I see profiles comments like a "facebook wall", I think this is one of the main areas that is useful for unregistered users to comment... not everyone wants to register at first. Commenting on someones profile and getting responses will make the user want to register.
I think that profile posts for unregistered users is useful feature that should be in the core
