well he does not care about my website. but mysql being an open source product, it is not totally under his control!

i mean he also controls openoffice now! its not like Go-oo would disappear!

Mysql is about as open-source as Java.

I gave you information regarding Java.

You're database software is next bro.

Oracle should make openoffice cloud based for enterprise solutions as well. Who else is competing with Google docs? Microsoft? Oracle IS the enterprise solution, and they own Sun. Just wait until more colleges start rolling out Google docs and it hits the corporate sector.

Don't you dare think for a second that postgre shouldn't be an option. The facts are facts.

The future of technology is cloud computing in which the paradigm changes from provisioning machines to provisioning and managing the users.

Oracle is the top dog, and they WILL destroy your open source product to cut one client's IT budget from 15million to 10 million.

well i have some worries that is why i posted in this thread in the first place.

but one thing is for clear. mysql is used by way too many open source and mmm paid products.

wordpress! vbulletin! phpbb! ipb! xenforo!

and as already discussed here... facebook is deeply involved and so are many other companies.

something or the other would come out in the end. a fork that is managed by these companies. perhaps.

very valid concern OperaManiac ... its not cheap to maintain one of Larry's little boats like this one. (owner of Oracle)

haha. you missed this news? http://blogs.oracle.com/office/2010/09/oracle_cloud_office_preview_at_oow_2010.html

as for PostgreSQL... i have been hearing about it for a long time. some of the hosting accounts i have used over the years had support for it. i even saw mods for wordpress to support postgresql. i never tried it myself i believe. but if it is a reasonable alternative (even for just big boards)... i am all in favor of it in future versions.

vb and ipb provide support for oracle and mssql i believe for extra money. i guess XF would be there someday!

we can only hope that MySQL survives the wrath of Oracle. of course it cannot be shut off from the open source scene. but there are still plenty of fears in the market.
If oracle cuts of mysql, im sure there are more experienced developers out there that can continue it.
...

Oracle is going to integrate mysql into enterprise solutions. What makes you think he cares about your website?

The guy who created MySQL is now working on a new project which I think there is a good chance to be an alternative for MySQL in some point in the future.
That is MariaDB

He left MySQL because updates were being pushed out to meet a release schedule, rather than any quality milestones. Some updates were pushed out with severe bugs and instability. Sound familiar?

For simplicity sake and wide scale usability, MySQL is a great choice for this forum to start out with. PostgreSQL is a great database structure to use for broad-style forums/boards/whateveryouwantocallit and I believe it would be essential to have it as an optional component for future structures. PostgreSQL can prevent some of the stress problems that MySQL has faced before and since some of the lead developers have left the MySQL project, the future stability of it could drop severely in the future...
I've only used PostgreSQL on an opensource game that called upon hundreds of tables and databases in a matter of seconds per user (max of 150 users online). MySQL kept up with the performances, but wasn't as great as PostgreSQL (really only differed by a 50 milliseconds as an average; anyone who played Call of Duty would know that's just enough to get you killed :p ).
Not sure how much this new forum/board will differ in structure but having the alternative for larger boards would help streamline and optimize it's performance.

While it would be nice to have the option, I - like many others - have a web host that only supports MySQL. I know that PostgreSQL has its advantages for larger forums, but I still know of some large forums that run perfectly fine with MySQL. I guess we'll have to see how large xenForo forums grow after release, and maybe the support for PostgreSQL will be added later on.

I only intend on having one database software installed on my servers.
Intention doesn't mean that you can't have an additional option on your software, nor would you ever have to use it.
I intend to drive my pos truck to work everyday. I do have the option of riding my bike or walking in addition to me driving. Doesn't mean I will but I do have several backup means in case I need to.

Well that's okay for you, what about the vast majority of Xen owners who will be using hosting companies?

MySQL is an industry standard, but would imagine with an eye on the future Kier and Mike have made the database stuff a layer, ergo they can add drivers for other db models where they see a requirement without it being a major rewrite. Someone could always write alternative db options themselves, am sure if it's solid enough Xenforo will be happy.

He's backing MySQL afaik.

At this point in time, it doesn't make much sense to use PostgreSQL, as it is only a BETA and v1 software (When gold is out); they can add support for different databases later on (And I think they have tentatively said they might).

Exactly ...

Anyone running a Microsoft server, but otherwise liking PHP apps is ending up running both MySQL and Microsoft SQL on the same server. It's really not that much of an issue.
