Lack of interest Post automatically goes to moderation queue when reported multiple times

I have a couple of large forums ( >10,000 members) with no moderators, (I like it that way) we rarely get crap posted and when we do the members are great at reporting posts, but if I am not around the spam or offensive post remains until I can get online to delete it. I would like the spam to disappear if trusted members report it. Example;

When a certain number of members ( say 4 but you could select how many) with a certain amount of reputation/posts/timeserved etc; report a post, it goes straight into moderation. Now that would be great.

I am sure on my sites this will be abused on people they don't like. But, I really like this idea.

I agree it could be abused, but if the post has to be reported by 4, 6, or even 10 members in good standing before it goes into moderation then that is a good check measure. Of course you will know who has reported and it would be easy to sort out any abuse. My forums are full of sensible adults and I do not think it would be abused. The problem is that on the odd occasion a spammer gets on and posts offensive rubbish. If the members could make that disappear from public view before I can get there, it would be brilliant.

When a post gets reported three or four times it should probably automatically go to moderation queue for checking by a moderator, agree?

This would have the benefit of hiding spam or other bad posts sooner, preventing it getting out of hand early on.

As with most things like this, the potential for abuse is there.

Well members should know that abuse will not be tolerated. So I assume this will not be a significant problem once that message is clear.

Well, I think it should be not simply sent to the queue, but become hidden, like on YouTube, so everyone can see content if he or she wish. I think we shouldn't be scared of abuse, because bad faith users can be easily detected and punished.

Would it be possible to implement an option to be able to hide a reported topic automatically after a certain amount of reports?

This is a great idea. As one night on my board i had 9 reports (spammer posted porn) & i couldn't get to it till 14 hours after the original post time.

I'm in two minds. I agree as it removes offensive material from the forum until the post can be verified as rulebreaking but then again if a user knows about this they can hide posts at their will by reporting a post X times.

A great idea with you as admin being able to set limits, such as people with so many posts can make a report like that, etc.

I'm sure something can easily be put in place to prevent an individual member from reporting the same topic multiple. This would then prevent this from ever being a problem.

Yeah, one person only reporting a post once is something I'd expect to be functionality here. The fact is that forums have friendship groups and it doesn't take much to get your friends to report something.

I understand your point, but keep in mind anything can be abused, even the 'like' button can be abused, does not mean we should remove it.

Also take into consideration that you would be able to disable this feature. Not everyone needs to use this feature if they do not want to.

The Like feature does not control whether a user's contribution is visible or not.

Yes, but it does control a user rep. Anyways, I'm not here to argue with you. If you do not like the feature, just do not click the like button.

I can think of many ways around your argument, like the following.

1. Do not turn the option on.
2. Only give the option to certain usergroups.

I'm not talking about myself personally, I'm just suggesting possible ways this could be a downfall. Consider it healthy debating

Usergroup-based is alright, it allows an administrator to control which usergroups can control post display and it's much safer than letting average users have that control.
