XF 1.4 Placeholders for Custom User Fields

Hi all,
I've created several custom user fields but can't get the placeholders to work.

Are the placeholders being entered correctly like so;

{$customFields.fieldId}
also
{$fieldId}

Is there more to it than that or is this all it needs?
The field ID, desc and title have been filled in and I've tried it without but the html placeholders don't show...

Am I missing something?

Actually, I think that is for the display after being filled in correct?
Not placeholders until they are filled in?
