=> I think English rules for singular/plurial are the same than in French, but may be you can use author/thread starter as uncountable nouns here. Just a detail, but just curious about this.
This is generally considered ok in English when you're unsure (or can't know) the gender of the person so you can't use the correct he/she pronoun, even though you're referring to a singular subject (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/he-or-she-versus-they).
