PHP Installation Statistics May 2017

It's interesting to note that PHP 5.4 installs account for only 3% of the total installs. Most people are on PHP 7, which is A Good Thing (although I must note that the usage statistics are from people who use Composer, so this might not be fully accurate, especially with crappy hosting services)

Yeah those results are going to be heavily skewed.

We've always found this to be a fairly good representation:

The sample size there is likely to be much bigger and coming from a slightly more familiar demographic.

I would like to think that XF is much more utilised than the 45% of WP blogs that are abandoned/unmaintained and sitting on the simplest and lowest form of shared hosting.

Well 80-90% of those stats are using v4.0 and above which is around 2.5 years old.
