Affected version
2.2.12
This happened awhile back and was the behavior was changed.

I'm using chrome/chromebook - latest build, updated yesterday to Xen 2.2.12

When I copy an image using the context menu, and paste it into a post,
the
Code:
tag is embedded. This can be seen here.

^^^^^ i'm not sure if you can see a placeholder - pasted it from our forum -
the bb code is

Code:
[IMG]https://www.mtbnj.com/forum/attachments/96e96863-e3b1-4c5e-91db-9ab2991070e1-jpeg.202335/[/IMG]

And it may work - not sure if i have our attachments public. (i can see it in the editor, cause it is cached & i'm logged in ??)

If i paste the same photo from google photos -

I can also see this in the editor - i won't be able to see it after I post.
Point is the author can't see the problem.

Which is ephemeral at best.

Here is the public URL of the photo on google.

I then used "attach files" and left it as a thumb....
IMG_3281.webp

I did a bad job of explaining the behavior change.

Before the latest update, when an image from google photos was copied and pasted into a post,
the forum software would upload the image to our site, then automatically attach the full image to the post.

The new action is to source the image from its original server.
Which will not work with google photos and some other sources.

IMHO: if i paste the image, i want the image on my server.
if i want to embed, i'd use the IMG tag or Tool

I confirm ... pasting copied image before 2.2.12 would upload the image as attachment .. posting copied images on 2.2.12 converts them to
.. this was a cool feature

Confirming as well. When I paste the image it uploads but it is showing as a gif as below:

1671270747236.webp

Running XF 2.2.12

It's an open bug report and will be addressed in due course.

There is no need to bump bug reports.

IMHO - bumped because nobody from the staff has commented - as they did in the 2.2.7 thread.

I'm not familiar with the life cycle of a bug report - has it been recognized as a bug to be corrected,
or is it in the phase where "deciding if it is a bug, or acceptable change in behavior?"

TY.

Until the developers respond it's an open unconfirmed bug report.

Occasionally open bug reports may be prefixed with 1673623682492.webp if it doesn't specifically require confirmation from a developer.

I don't have the impression that it has been specified but the functionality still works correctly when copying / pasting from a PC / Mac, it is from images copied on the internet that it no longer works.

Yes -

Current work around:
Images on the 'net can be downloaded, then copied/pasted or attached.
Once they are local, all good.

Copying an image on a webpage, then pasting it, embeds the URL of the image.
Sourcing it from the original location. The original location may not allow others to view it,
or the link may be ephemeral.

My gut feeling here is that the lawyers are dealing with it, not the techies.

Can you take someone's image, and behind the scenes put it on another server, so the original owner can't control it ???
Esp in the case with Google, whose business model is built around tracking.
And they can claim the user doesn't know their image is going out into the wild.

I can think of a few tech reasons (large paste/upload on mobile for one) - there are solutions.

Images from Whatapp / Telegram (web versions) are the main issue. At times, randomly, some websites don't work too.

Is there any indication of if this might be fixed/looked at at all please @Chris D? There seems to have been several threads about it now, in differing places - any idea if this will be reverted or stay as it is from my perspective would be ideal just to clarify.

Many Thanks :)

As an alternative - the system should refuse to paste/img-src them with a warning that they are private/ephemeral.
at least the unwary forum member won't work up a great post only to have it cannon-balled by pics that didn't embed.
