Can images be hosted externally or do they have to be hosted on the same server as the XF install?

[bd] Attachment Store is a great product - we use it. If not an attachment, of course static images around the site can be hosted anywhere. Avatars can also be off-loaded pretty easily. For example we use S3 for avatars by defining the two external data configs and registering an S3 stream, no need for an add-on or any core code modification
