So I gave a user a 1 week temporary limitation on their account.

Technically its a 1 week ban, but you don't want to display "BANNED" under the username on every one of their posts, with a big STRIKETHROUGH on their username.

This implies they've been booted from the forums forever.

In general, unless a user is permanently banned, you should not be changing anything on their username for the rest of the users to see. And even then, that should be optional. It can cause a lot of drama and headaches.

At the very least there should be an option for Admins to define how limited / temp ban users are displayed.

How do I undo this, and how do we get an enhancement request to the devs since this is not how it should be handled?

If you want it to be visible to non staff you can set a user group for banned users to be added to, and control the username styling that way, as well as the user title

Or there are a couple of small addons that will display those things automatically.

In all my years managing forums, banning is intended to be permanent.

For anything less, we call it a suspension. What we've done is create a secondary usergroup that removes all of their privileges such as posting, replying, liking, private conversations, etc., in essence making the forum read-only for them. If the usergroup is set up properly, it can remove those permissions while they are suspended. And it is even more powerful when tied into the Warnings system, since that can apply a secondary usergroup to a warning along with a time limit so they automatically get the suspension lifted after a week. There is no indication to anyone in the forum that the member is suspended either.

Yes that's the way we've always done it. Banned is banned, for lesser things we have a usergroup called 'Suspended' this group has has the Banner Text 'Sin Bin'. Give them 10 warning points and in they go to the sin bin and get an automatic 1 month ban. Everyone can see the Sin Bin banner and the ban is lifted by the system automatically.

See @Rudy 's reply for exactly how we do it as well.
In fact, in our case, we do allow suspendees to use Conversations and to post in just one forum - both as a vehicle for them to challenge the decision if they care to. But that's not a necessary part of it; it's just how we choose to handle it. Suspendees handled in this way can do, or not do, whatever you set up as their peremissions.
