As designed New threads widget doesn't work in sidebar with display style set to full

I'm sure someone will have raised this before, but I've just searched and can't find it, so just looking for confirmation that this "as designed".

If I set the following option in the New Threads widget:


Then it looks like this if you place it in the sidebar:

This is as designed -- you can see that the simple case is designed for things like sidebars, where the space limit is known (even on large clients).
