XF 2.2 Moving the filter bar to the sidebar

Is there a way to move the filter bar to the sidebar (or anywhere else)?
We'd like the filter box to stay open in the sidebar, instead of opening a menu in popup.

I would search for it in the template, copy the right section into a widget and then place that widget where you want it. I would leave the filter bar but you could remove it if you want to.

Tried that already.
It doesn't work (and I get server errors too)...

I gather the reason for the widget not working is due to the fact not all variables are sent to the template.

I tried copying the section into the template itself but can't figure out a way to open the filters in the page (and keep them open) rather than pressing the filter button and having the filters open in a popup...
