Moderating user group

If I add someone as moderator, do I also need to add them to the Moderating user group? I don't understand the purpose of the user group.

The user group is for the base level moderator permissions you want all moderators to have.

It's easier and quicker than setting custom user permissions for every moderator.

For any additional moderator permissions, e.g. for "super" moderators, you can set user permissions.

Bumping this up because I'm having doubts about this too...

Let's assume we have:

• 15 forum nodes
• 3 categories (5 nodes each)

9 users we want to promote to moderators

• 6 regular moderator
• 3 super moderator

What would the correct procedure be, to give correct permissions to all of them?

I'm confused because I see the Moderating user groups has all moderating permissions set to NO.... and I really can't understand the point of it
