Is this a permanent action or can you change forums and urn it off? Also is it done via cron because I tried it but didn't see anything added?

There's a rebuild task which can be run if the node settings are changed.

Besides selecting the source forum and saving is there anything else I need to do? Nothing seems to be added.

Newly added content will be mirrored.

For existing content the rebuild task needs to be run.
