Merging posts in a thread

It is possible to merge various posts in a thread into one post. But to me it sounds a bit odd because these posts make up the discussion in a thread and wouldn't merging disturb the discussion?
I understand the merging of various forum threads where the posts in the individual threads are kept and just moved to one forum thread.

Can anyone submit a good reason for merging various posts to one post in the same thread?

I assume this is just a useless function in xenForo.

Some people like to keep threads "clean" by combining messages by a single user. If it doesn't sound like something you'd use, you can simply ignore it.

Well, I have used it to merge posts by "machine gun posters". They are people that will post multiple posts in a row instead of posting it all in one, or editing to add new info.
