What does implies merging templates after an upgrade?

I have a customized style - will I lose all the changes if I merge?

If you have customised the style yourself, you can merge the templates.

If it is a third party style, get an updated version from the author.

The manual page I linked to explains it in detail.

Custom changes are not lost - they are merged with the new version of the template.
