MariaDB version?

I am on shared hosting with a smallish Canadian host. It is inexpensive and most of my user base are Canadian so there's support for "buying local" so there's never been any incentive to move. I would have to move if I needed to go to a full virtual server since their virtual private server offering has been "coming soon" forever.

That said, after some of the recent discussions about MariaDB, I have realized that the version they are giving us is old, to put it charitably. Xenforo is reporting it as version 10.0.17 and I keep hearing people talking about 10.2.x and higher on here.

I'm an MS SQL Server guy in my professional life so not terribly familiar with MySQL, MariaDB and the various versions and forks thereof, but seeing numbers like that kind of worries me. Like someone still running SQL Server 2008 kind of worried.

Something to be concerned about? To pester my host about? Or is this just my ignorance of MariaDB showing?

Only 10.2 and newer are supported, they really should upgrade.

I use 10.3.x and actually stable version is 10.5.x (https://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/+releases/)

Decided to open a ticket with my host to ask about their plans. We are paid up to March 2021 so I wouldn't consider moving host until then but if they don't give me a satisfactory answer, I may have to look at what my options are. Thanks, all.

I contacted my host about upgrading as I use cPanel. Apparently the version I am on is 10.3.2x and they said that for cPanel hosts there is a problem. They gave me the following links:

The version of MariaDB in use is the most current one available on a Cpanel server.

There are ongoing feature requests on the Cpanel forums to add support for higher versions, but they aren't available yet.

Good to know but even 10.3.2x would be a step forward from an unsupported release.

I believe 10.3.27 is the latest stable release available to cPanel at the moment. If you have been using 10.3.2x you should be automatically updated, depending on the server settings.

I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to upgrade to 10.4.x or 10.5.x even if it were available with cPanel, not after the widespread problems caused by their release of 10.3.26. Let someone else do the beta testing.

I'm using 10.3.27 but I just didn't want to say that for security reasons. Anyway...maybe they will get this fixed someday.

I'm sorry I meant get the situation fixed for the 10.5.x versions and cPanel that I linked to. I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that.

And just to close the loop on this thread, after I inquired, my host suddenly scheduled my server for a DB upgrade next week. Squeaky wheel got the grease, I guess. Just need to confirm what version we are getting and make sure I know any ramifications

cPanel 11.98.x, now in the "Current" branch, includes the 10.5 installer. But expect bugs (lots of warnings in the installer page).
