XF 1.2 Make thread display options sticky for users?

Got this question from one of my users:

"Thread Display Options." When I reset the default of "Last message time" to "Thread creation time", it works for that viewing, but then reverts to default. Is there a way to reset Thread Display Options so that it sticks? Thanks

The option is not permanent, it just sorts for that page view.

No, you will need an add-on. You can choose a default sort order in your node options.

Makes no sense, does it?
If users wanted to adjust it for just one page visit, it wouldn't take any more clicks than it takes to adjust it again permanently

It's not about the number of clicks, it's about storing each individual members preference for every forum.
