I changed my password with passwd and then ran the update command yum update I actually watched a 10 min vid by some dude named Guvnor that went through the Linode control panel but their stuff didn't look anything like what I see in my current vps control panel. I bookmarked your link though thank you very much.

I am used to cPanel because that's what I've been using for a year and a half. Are you saying you don't like cpanel because you'd rather do stuff through another program or do you mean the command line and if the command line through what program?

I just use Putty and connect to the server via SSH, it's peachy. I used to like using my cPanel on my old shared host but it adds a lot of overhead which means you need to spend more on ram. Honestly it's all gravy though and you'll probably enjoy learning.

What I did was got a Linode while I was still using my shared host, spent a week learning how to set up the server so that I could host a website. Literally just followed the guide over and over and every time I got it up and running I would just wipe it and redeploy the server again. Once I was confident setting the server up I practiced migrating the site for another few days, this was a bit more tricky but practice makes perfect.

You will undoubtedly have a few OMG what have I done moments but you work through them and at the end of it all youve learned something. It's fun.

Protip... Fork out the extra couple of bucks for backups. I haven't had to restore from a backup yet but it puts your mind at ease and that's priceless.

Personally I think control panels add a layer of complexity to a server not remove it. It's worth your time if you're going to run a site to learn how to administer your server. Plus you will end up with a leaner server that functions better, and if you set it up yourself/with someone else you'll learn how to do it rather then just having a control panel do it for you.

I started with Linux as a server about 5-6 years ago and it really doesn't take a long time to learn.

Also the Linode control panel is only really for managing DNS and deploying your VPS, everything else you do by yourself via SSH.

Yeah I wasn't really talking about that control panel, I more meant like the WHM/Cpanel or webmin or whatever the flavor of the year is.

Take a look at this guide, this looks long right? http://library.linode.com/lemp-guides/ubuntu-10.04-lucid after some practice you can complete the whole setup in less than 10 minutes. It's not a long a process as you think once you're confident and are familiar with the language and steps.

I will need a control panel since I'm a beginner that has to spend more time on other website related stuff such as my wiki. I'm just trying to learn the basics right now and when I have the time I'll study more advanced stuff because I'm genuinely curious.

I have Ubuntu Studio Lucid 10.04 installed as a partition on my computer that I use whenever my Windows 7 crashes or is jacked up beyond belief. I had mainly installed it to see what I could do with the video editing programs on there back when I used to edit music videos as a hobby. I also installed some version of Linux on my og PS3 but I never use any of those OS. I just did all that because I was curious and wanted a back up. So if I can install Linux then I'll probably do some of what you were talking about earlier in the thread. I just procrastinate and forget sometimes. I didn't go to school for this or study linux or any of that. Just curious. I don't want to delve too deep into any of that stuff or I won't get anything else done.

There isn't much of a difference I guess really, my VPS gets backed up every 24 hours automatically, I've set the backup to run at 3am local time to me which means there's minimum disruption to the site while that's happening, this is all set up via the Linode control panel.

It's starting to sound like you did all of that practicing just so that you could be comfortable with the command line. I don't want anything to do with it because it requires me to google commands like how I am right now, trying to figure out how to lock down ssh and prevent logins using root username. etc. Google google google. Google google google. Then when you find something that looks like it works, double-check in google. lol

You installed a program through the command line and even set it to run at that time through control panel? See that's another thing, with no UI, it would require me to do like you did and practice a lot just to memorize commands and then on top of that, I don't like going into different directories just to edit a file when I can't even see it as a folder in front of me like in File Manager for cPanel for instance.
