Looking For An Offshore VPS Under $40 a Month

I have been unemployed recently so I've been optimizing my bills and realized I have to do something about my hosting bill. I decided to go offshore due to recent SOPA and Megauplaod drama in America even though my site doesn't really host any illegal content. I currently have the vbGold package which makes my bill $34.95 a month and includes 15GB RAID-10 Disk Space, 300 GB Premium Bandwidth, R1 Hourly Backup, Softaculous and has Cpanel. My current server stats: Disk Space Usage 5134.53 / 15000 MB Monthly Bandwidth Transfer 19161.87 / 3000000 MB My main site's domain stats: Alexa Traffic Rank: 302,046 United States Traffic Rank in US: 171,687. My site is a year and a 1/2 old. I have 4 other domains on my site which are mostly just blog sites I made for friends that they don't use at all so it has no effect on my site's performance.

I need a VPS because I can't get GeoIP to work with URLjet's shared hosting, even after they moved me to a server with php 5.3 and GeoIP installed and for some reason, I am not able to use Cloudflare CDN without my site going offline almost every other day no matter how many times both Cloudflare and URLjet help. Another reason I would like to move from shared hosting is because I would like to be more in control of my site's page speed performance. My site's score has dropped recently after my move to a 'faster' server and they say nothing is wrong even after I complained about it. I went from having a 95 score to 84 and after months of issues I feel like it's time to move on. From what I've read in the following threads, I'm already paying too much for shared hosting:

Is it normal for a shared host to not have GeoIP installed?
High End VPS vs Low End Dedi vs "the cloud", etc

Another thing I forgot to mention is that although I listed that I'm using 5gb, it's more like 2gb because the 3 gb mostly came from rigel's sitemap modification. For some reason it created way too many sitemaps so I'm deleting them right now.

Another reason I created this thread is because I have just been accepted into Google's Page Speed Service (took them several months) and don't want to start out using them with the current issues I'm having.

These two sites looks like they have a good starting price for a VPS compared to my current host:

http://www.knownhost.com/

But that's America.

This looks good for Entry Level Cloud (VPS) http://www.nimbushosting.co.uk/

But that's UK.

This looked okay until I saw the set up fee: http://www.server4you.net/

Was really liking this: http://glesys.com/ until they asked for my Social Security Number. Quickly backed out.

Gonna need to research more hosts...

Only has a setup fee on their dedicated server. You said you're looking for a VPS. No setup fee at this time.

Sweden law states that they must have a valid ID on anyone they do business with. They also use this to report to anyone who abuses their system (none paying customers). Glesys is a pay as you go type business ...ie... You pay for only want you use... ie ... You use first, then pay your dues at the end of the month like any normal utility bill (no up front payment like typical American host).

(Sweden does count Internet access & web hosting services as utilities)

Weird! Still passing! lol

Is server4you's vServer Cloud the VPS?

*takes a look at vServer Pro x4, compares stats*

I see a contract for two years but I want to change it to 1 year just in case.

First 6 months free. Bill is $11.70 a month (€ 8.85) vs. my current bill of $34.95

25,000 MB Webspace (SCSI) vs. 15,000 MB (of which I only use 2GB)

2,048 MB FlexRAM vs I have no idea (Shared Hosting)

5,000 GB Bandwidth/month vs 300 GB

1 Dedicated IP Address which is what I have now.

Okay so what's the catch?

*googles reviews*

Horrible!

Moving on along...

FanaticalVPS (Germany)

You can get their Huge VPS plan for $30, but if you sign up soon you can use their "TWOYEAR" code which gives you 30% off lifetime, meaning any payments after the first one will be 30% ($21/month).

Ram: 1.5GBs with a Burst of 3GBs
Disk Space: 130GBs
Connection: 1Gbps (shared)
Bandwidth: Unlimited
IPs: 1 IPv4 and 1 IPv6 (You can get more IPs, IPv4's if you can provide valid justification. I'm sure IPv6 won't be an issue...)

Disk I/O
Code:
[root@backup ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

I've had a "Huge" VPS with them for quite some time now and I'm extremely satisfied with them, I use it as a backup server for my dedicated server and it works wonderfully. I was using a 25% lifetime coupon but then saw the 30% one, contacted billing and they switched me to the 30% promptly. Great support, I highly recommend them.

You can probably find another VPS host with better disk I/O rates but Shared 1000Mbps connection, unlimited b/w, IPv6 are well worth it. Setup is extremely fast, reinstalling an OS also just takes a few seconds.

Another VPS host I use is Linode, though you may not find the same specs as FanaticalVPS they are still superb.

For $40/month you can get: 1GB RAM, 40GB Disk space, 400GB b/w, Share 100Mbps connection, 1 IPv4 and 1 IPv6 (getting more IPv6 is no problem).

They are located worldwide (US, UK, JAP) I have a linode in the US and UK and for the above tests I used my UK (London), since you were looking for offshore.

The support from linode is EXTREMELY helpful, your open tickets get replied to in a matter of minutes, stability is amazing. I would also highly recommend them.

Sent them an email due to their rave reviews. Waiting on a reply.

From their Customer Support: ...you should be able to use GeoIP, but please note that we are an unmanaged provider, meaning that we do not and will not help customers with any issues that may arise within their own VM.

^^^Awwww crap. If I had an admin who knew who to do all that stuff I'd buy a server from them in a heartbeat.

So at this point I either need to keep shopping or find a server administrator.

I posted I need a server administrator on my facebook and this chick I dated a couple years ago hit me up and told me she could do it. I forgot that she was a server administrator. Man I'm glad we left on good terms or she wouldn't have offered.

Depending on which OS you go with, Debian and probably Ubuntu you could most likely do:
Code:
apt-get install php5-geoip
/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Assuming you are going with apache2.

Thanks but before I can get to that I need to know wtf I'm doing. I bought the service but I won't be transferring over my main site. I'll only just do my gaming xenforo forum since no one posts there and won't mind the down time. Gonna be reading a lot of FAQS, How-To's and Wikis for the next couple of days.

Another vote for Linode I was with a solid shared host provider but when I outgrew them Linode was just a natural progression, I haven't looked back.
